Although chicories look a lot like lettuce, they are different plants! Lettuce belongs to the daisy family, while chicories have their own branch. Chicories tend to have a stronger, sometimes bitter flavour that most lettuces lack.
Sugarloaf chicory has a slightly bitter, nutty taste. It loses its bitterness if washed in lukewarm water.
